Explorer, best-selling author, scientist, and first woman to row across the Atlantic Ocean from mainland to mainland. Julie Angus is the first woman to row across the Atlantic Ocean from mainland to mainland. In 2005/2006, Julie and her partner rowed 10,000 km from Portugal to Costa Rica, a 5 month journey that included surviving 2 hurricanes, intimate encounters with marine life, and many soul-searching moments. Julie received international acclaim for her achievement, including National Geographic's 2007 Adventurer of the Year Award. More recently, Julie completed a rowing journey from Scotland to Syria, a 7,000 km adventure that is detailed in her latest book, Rowed Trip From Scotland to Syria by Oar. She is also the author of the national bestseller, Rowboat in a Hurricane. Her writing has appeared in the Globe and Mail, National Post and enRoute among others, and her photography is published around the world in publications ranging from Reader's Digest to the Guardian. Julie uses her adventurers to encourage students to make active and healthy choices and is currently preparing for her next expedition, which is also partnered with a student learning initiative. What makes Julie's story remarkable is that prior to 2005 she had no previous experience as an adventurer. Julie is a trained biologist with a graduate degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Victoria and had spent a decade studying and developing treatments for heart disease, cancer and genetic ailments. Her transition from a scientific career to that of a disciplined adventurer required drawing on skills honed from years in the corporate world. Julie draws on lessons learned in extreme environments to motivate and inspire her audiences to reach their goals and overcome challenges. Her compelling story and skilful delivery using powerful images and video consistently receives rave reviews and standing ovations. Julie shares her harrowing stories of life on the stormy ocean, tying the theme of surviving through a hurricane in a rowboat to perseverance in today's economic climate.
