McClelland & Stewart Poetry

McClelland & Stewart’s legendary poetry program has had a distinguished history, marked by innovation and the dedication to discovering new voices. The program publishes 2-4 titles annually, in the spring, and as of March 2014, at the recommendation of the inaugural M&S poetry board, comprising well-known and highly respected poets and editors Ken Babstock, Dionne Brand, and Kevin Connolly.

McClelland & Stewart has been for decades and remains the only large publisher in Canada to publish poetry. It formalized a poetry program in the early 1980s, under the editorship of Dennis Lee. M&S poets have received the highest recognition and awards in the country, including the Griffin Poetry Prize four times. Historically, M&S was the publisher of such poets as Margaret Avison, Earle Birney, Ralph Gustafson, Irving Layton, Gwendolyn MacEwen, and Al Purdy, and has more recently published a long list of acclaimed poets, including: Margaret Atwood, Roo Borson, Dionne Brand, Anne Carson, Leonard Cohen, Lorna Crozier, Lorna Goodison, Sonnet L’Abbé, Tim Lilburn, Daphne Marlatt, Don McKay, Anne Michaels, Jacob McArthur Mooney,  Michael Ondaatje,  Melanie Siebert, Anne Simpson, and Paul Vermeersch. Published in 2014 is Trillium Poetry Prize winner Adam Sol’s fourth collection, Complicity, his first book with McClelland & Stewart.
