In 2005, Random House of Canada President and CEO Brad Martin and then-Doubleday Canada Publisher Maya Mavjee conceived of an imprint that would be the new Canadian home for the finest international fiction and non-fiction writers. The vision was to ensure that every book on the list would be published with singular passion and care, just as Doubleday’s own Canadian books are. Indeed, these international books and authors would complement the longstanding Doubleday Canada program, and to highlight that relationship, the imprint took its name from the historic street in Toronto where we began publishing seventy-five years ago.
Bond Street Books quickly established itself as the “Address of Excellence” it had aspired to be, attracting International Man Booker Prize winners Chinua Achebe and Ismail Kadare, and Booker Prize nominees Mohsin Hamid and Steve Toltz. A thrilling mix of emerging and established writers soon followed, many of whom had won or had been nominated for prestigious awards—among them, extraordinary first-time authors Diana Evans, Nam Le and Catherine O’Flynn alongside Lorrie Moore, Sebastian Faulks, Kate Atkinson and Haruki Murakami. The list also combines critical and commercial success with authors such as Paula McLain, Karen Thompson Walker, Helen Simonson and Rachel Joyce, and several titles reaching #1 on the New York Times bestseller list: The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski, The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield and Chris Cleave’s Little Bee.
