Betty Jane Wylie

A poet and playwright first, Betty Jane Wylie turned to journalism and non-fiction when her husband died in order to support herself and her children. Probably best known for her longtime bestselling book, Beginnings: A Book for Widows (in print now for twenty-five years), she has published thirty-five books, including biography, self-help, financial planning, inspiration, cookbooks, belles lettres and two books of poetry. About twenty of her three dozen plays, children’s plays and puppet plays (produced in theatres in Canada, the U.S., Britain and New Zealand) have also been published. Her first film, Coming of Age (with Donald Martin), won two Gemini awards, and she has acted as host, writer and facilitator of three television documentary series. A founding member of the Playwrights’ Union of Canada and of the Periodical Writers’ Association of Canada, she was chair of the Writers’ Union of Canada (1988-89). Her own favourite book is Reading Between the Lines: The Diaries of Women, the research for which confirmed her theory that all women are pataphysicians.
