My first novel in 1972 elicited a savage diatribe from a male reviewer
who took exception to a woman writing from a man's point of view.
How times have changed! A Celibate Season, 1991, co-written
with Carol Shields, is partly a male voice, but did not, as far
as I know, outrage anyone. The protagonist of my latest novel, Penelope's
Way, is an aging woman. She is unlikely to be a lightning rod
for the wrath of either sex.
