Writing a short story was a new adventure for me and my co-author
and daughter, Katherine Gardiner. Participating full-time in the
work force for many years, while having an active family life, has
given me opportunity to see situations similar to the ones encountered
by the characters in our story.
My early years
were spent on a farm, the granddaughter of Finnish immigrants. My
parents worked hard to provide a living for me and my two younger
brothers. They instilled a love of reading and learning which is
still part of my life. School has always interested me, starting
with my experience at six-years-old, in a three-room rural building
with outdoor plumbing, and continuing to the present.
Currently I
am Professor of Family Studies, Faculty of Human Ecology, University
of Manitoba, Winnipeg, where I teach, conduct research and do academic
writing. Recently I edited two books published by Ashgate in England:
Walking a Tightrope: Meeting the Challenges of Work and Family,
and Maintaining our Differences: Minority Families in Multicultural
Societies.
