My life was shaped by my family and our having come through the crucible of war and loss together. My father and mother were courageous, indomitable and as different as night and day. When I was 5, we lived in a tiny rented apartment, and my father told me that some day we would go to the opera together, sit in a box and I would wear a long dark red velvet ball gown. He was right.
